DESCRIPTION: Paint Main 2.5 is an opportunity for artists in the wider community to create, show, and sell their work during the Festival. Please read the following instructions and rules carefully to ensure you are prepared for the process and setting. Artists will paint en plein air for 2 ½ hours, after which time the paintings will be publicly displayed and judged by our guest artist, Hai-Ou Hou. A sales period will follow, ending in time to pack up before the evening Virginia Symphony concert.
CHECK-IN: Artists are required to register (see notes on registration below) and to check-in at Arts on Main, 6580 Main Street, Gloucester Courthouse from 8:00 am – 9:00 am on Saturday prior to the start of the event. Painting surfaces used to create paintings for Paint Main 2.5 must be marked on the back with the official Gloucester Arts Festival stamp. The surface must be blank with nothing pre-painted or pre-drawn. Up to three surfaces may be stamped.
FEES: Community Artists, $10; Students ages 13-18 years, $5; Invited Artists, no fee.
BOUNDARIES: The geographic boundaries for the Paint Main 2.5 competition are along Main Street.
To the east: Ware House Road (Rt.621) just beyond the Edge Hill House.
To the west: Justice Drive just beyond the Courthouse Green circle.
Easels must be set up within the Main Street boundaries; however, scenes visible outside of the boundaries may be painted.
SET UP: Artists may choose their site and set up their equipment before the competition officially begins at 9:00 am.
BEGIN: At 9:00 am, an air horn will sound signaling the start of plein air painting. Artists must use the painting surface that has been stamped with the official Gloucester Arts Festival stamp obtained at check-in. Paintings must be completed only during the designated Paint Main 2.5 time frame (9:00–11:30 am).
STOP: All artists must cease painting at 11:30 am. An air horn will signal the time.
FRAME: Every Paint Main 2.5 painting must be presented framed and displayed on an easel provided by the artist in order to be judged. It is recommended that works done on paper be matted and framed. White or off-white mats are recommended. Artists are responsible for supplying frames, mats, and easels. A work area will be available for framing and matting but no supplies will be provided by the Festival staff.

EXHIBIT and JUDGING: All artists have until 12:15 pm to gather their supplies, including easels, and proceed to the Tabb House lawn, 6596 Main Street, across from the fire station. Artists will setup their easels here, frame their paintings and display them for judging. Judging begins promptly at 12:15 pm. Any artist not prepared by that time will not qualify for judging. Cash prizes and awards are presented at 1:30 pm. Only work created during this event is eligible for judging. All exhibited artwork must be for sale and must remain on display until the exhibit concludes at 3:00 pm. Easels and any unsold artworks must be picked up between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Gloucester Arts Festival is not responsible for any equipment or artworks left after 4:00 pm.
SALE: Each Paint Main 2.5 artwork must have a title and price and is required to be for sale. Paintings sold are subject to a 35% commission that goes to the Cook Foundation to help with event expenses. Virginia State Sales Tax (5.3%) will be added to the price of each artwork that sells. Sales transactions (including cash, check and credit card sales) will be managed on site by Gloucester Arts Festival event staff. The artists must provide either a Social Security Number or Federal EIN for any sale over $600.00. Artists may not transact their own sales.
